SOS I & 2 / INFINITY / THE GALANTY SHOW / TRACK / TWIN (in collaboration with Casey Doyle)

INFINITY

Duration of Video: INFINITY (4 minutes, 23 seconds)

INIFINITY is a silent digital video, 2010.

The heart of INFINITY is a film passage that began as an experiment by Thomas Edison to merge sound with moving image. For more than a century this film had quite literally lost its voice. However, even without its sound track, it appears remarkably current in the context of today’s cultural landscape. This loop is a celebration of bodies in motion. One pair spinning in awkwardly tender circles while the other player sends sound waves down a cone in search of a place to land (to be recorded) in the hope of being reunited with its image in another time and place. When looped in an endless mirrored world of forward and reverse, this timeless sequence seems to last forever.

THE GALANTY SHOW

Duration of Video: THE GALANTY SHOW (15 minutes)

THE GALANTY SHOW is a silent digital video, 2009.

Everything you see is a shadow. Pirates, clowns, a jumping ballerina, hula hooping bunnies, a yogini and other hybrids combine to form this world of x-ray play. Spaces are drawn open to reveal multiple vignettes that are happening in another place at another time.

These are all real time actions with the exception of one, with its frames dropped and time condensed. She is a hybrid, part clown and part magician, slowly assembling a hat as a vehicle for her own transformation. These actions celebrate the heroic and vulnerable nature of simple gestures. Balloons swell, objects orbit, coils expand and bubbles fall slowly as accumulated gestures combine to take everyday actions into the realm of the extraordinary.

TRACK

Duration of Video: TRACK (8 minutes)

TRACK is a silent digital video, 2008.

All of the animals on this train exist on Earth at this time. Some are domesticated; others populate our circuses and zoos or serve us as beasts of burden, while some remain free. Each animal in this caravan is arrested in a cage that can only become realized as a projected silhouette. As this timeless procession moves across the horizon of a frozen theater, one is left to imagine where this journey started and where it is heading.

TRACK is a video that captures both animate and inanimate projections. This silent shadow play was inspired by the paper animations of Lotte Reiniger (1899-1981) and is a celebration of early film. We embraced bricolage strategies in our making and child-like imagery that gains gravity over time.

TWIN

Duration of Video: TWIN (4 minutes, 44 seconds)

SOS is a silent digital video, 2010.

TWIN is a silent meditation on movement and the charged space between objects. Feet immobile, these whimsical cats are locked in a magnetic dance that is at once playful and sad. Driven by a hand that is never seen, the space of video makes the scale of these wooden felines flexible. Their bodies collapse in synchronized movements that are both familiar and unnatural. The object, once mirrored, becomes twice removed thus calling the original into question and making the space between the real and simulated a matter of pure conjecture.
