SURRENDER (New York), a durational performance by Alison Crocetta in collaboration with Charlotte Schulz as part of SkowheganPerforms at Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, New York. Performed from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm on September 28, 2013.

Project Proposal:

Surrender is an occurrence in many childhood games. It is the moment when one player concedes victory to another. It indicates a shift in power. I will raise a white flag of surrender while singing songs about freedom that are derived from African American spirituals and folk songs such as This Little Light of Mine and We Shall Overcome. This work contemplates the lack of resistance that is inherent in surrender and the possibility of personal freedom within that space.

I have invited Charlotte Schulz to draw this performance action as a way of recognizing the history of war artists in our country since our Civil War. She is the witness. Her drawing will serve as the only record of the event: one time-based action recording another.
